Industry works
The brief was to design a museum in Newport, west of Melbourne. The site was the existing train station carpark, located around 5 mins walk from Newport’s main street, and between the local oval and the railway terminal.
Industryworks would exhibit the rich manufacturing history of Melbourne’s west. It would be a subsidiary of Scienceworks with visitors able to travel between the two museums using the Metro line.
Industryworks would help revitalise Newport by continuing the Mason St shops at the entrance of the museum.
The museum is separated into two halves; an exhibition section, and a workshop and storage section.
The main exhibit section is divided into 6 parts; an indigenous exhibition running though the center to signify its importance. The other exhibitions are connected either side, allowing visitors to move between exhibitions as they please.
Visitors can either enter through the carpark or through the front from Newport Station.
Staff have a lift from the carpark to the reception and the offices, or to the workshop and storage section.
The workshop and storage section of the museum allows visitors to experience old manufacturing techniques and skills in the maintenance of the exhibits from a viewing area above the workshop floor.
Through the large glass doors on both the museum and workshop sections, exhibits are transferred between the workshop, exhibitions and/or off-site storage by train or truck.
